The SARU fellowship program is supported by Novo Nordisk Fonden, Carlsbergfondet and Villum Fonden.
Program Details
• Program Period: 1 November 2024 to 31 March 2026
• Available fellowships: Approx. 23
• Funding and duration: Fellows will be employed at a Danish university or research
institution and receive a full monthly salary at Postdoc or Research Assistant level.
Fellowships can last up to 12 months. The latest possible start date for a 12-month fellowship is April 1, 2025. Fellowships beginning after this date will be shortened to align with the SARU fellowship end date of March 31, 2026.
Eligibility
The SARU fellowship program is open for candidates from all academic disciplines.
To be eligible, candidates must have been affiliated as a researcher with a Ukrainian university at the time of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Additionally, candidates must have commenced a PhD educational program in Ukraine or hold a PhD degree. In addition to this, researchers should have an academic proficiency in English.
Selection Process and Prioritization
Applications will be reviewed by member institutions of SAR Denmark and prioritized
according to the following criteria:
• First Priority: Researchers from Ukrainian universities who are currently employed at a Danish university, as well as those who were previously employed at a Danish university (e.g. through an ongoing or previously completed SARU Fellowship).
This prioritization aims to support researchers who already have an affiliation with a
Danish university, enabling them to continue their work in Denmark until conditions in Ukraine improve.
If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of available fellowships, a
lottery system will be used to allocate the positions among the qualified candidates. In
the first round of the lottery, each participating university will be granted one fellowship to ensure the widest possible geographical distribution. Afterwards, all remaining fellowships will be drawn by lottery from a common pool.
• Second Priority: Applications from researchers at Ukrainian universities who have not previously been employed with a Danish university will be considered, provided there is funding available after the first-priority applicants have been considered. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of available fellowships, a lottery will be used to allocate the positions among the qualified applicants.
Application Process and Documents
Danish universities and research institutions that are members of SAR Denmark are eligible to apply for fellowships. The application must be submitted by the host institution in collaboration with a designated researcher.
The application, written in English, should include a brief application letter (1-2 pages) containing:
- The researcher’s current situation, including employment status and country
of residence. - Planned work assignments and anticipated results during the SARU Fellowship (for those who previously held a SARU-Fellowship: a description of whether the new fellowship will build on the previous SARU project or if you initiate a new research project).
- A brief description of how the SARU Fellowship will contribute to the future
reconstruction of academia in Ukraine (if relevant). - The researchers CV.
- A copy of the diploma and PhD degree, or documentation of commenced PhD education.
- An academic evaluation (1-2 pages) from the host institution.
Please send the application documents via email to: interstaff@adm.ku.dk, preferably as a single PDF document.
Comment: When extending an ongoing or recently concluded employment, we recommend that the applying institution contacts HR to assess whether the designated researcher can continue the employment in accordance with applicable HR-legislations, including Employment Act (Ansættelsesbekendtgørelsen).
Application Deadline: 4 November 2024
